FAQ

I get many email’s requesting information about papillons, japanese chin and shelties. Hopefully this page will help to address some of those questions. I am also available to answer any questions that may not be addressed here. Email me anytime.

Q: How big are your Papillons, Japanese Spaniel (Chin) and Shetland Sheepdogs?

Papillon – The breed standard states that papillons should be between 8 and 11 inches at the shoulder.

Japanese Spaniel – The breed standard states that Japanese Spaniels should be between 8 and 11 inches at the shoulder.

Shetland Sheepdog – The breed standard states that Sheltie should be between 13 and 16 inches at the shoulder.

Of course from time to time these breeds can be on the bigger or smaller side. I’ve seen many that are either above or below the breed standard and do well in performance sports or just as a companion.

Q: Do Papillons, Japanese Spaniel (Chin) and Shetland Sheepdogs bark?

Papillon and Japanese Spaniels – Yes they do! For the most part, I do not find papillons to be excessive barkers but they are intelligent, alert little dogs and do bark when they hear unfamiliar noises.

Shetland Sheepdog – Yes they do! Shelties were breed to be alarm dogs for the farmers. They can be trained to curtail on the amount of barking.

Q: Do Papillons, Japanese Spaniel (Chin) and Shetland Sheepdogs shed?

Papillon and Japanese Spaniels – do shed. They are not a non-shedding breed however they are single coated which means they have no undercoat. Daily combing can help to minimize shedding and help to eliminate the amount of matting (especially around the ears).

Shetland Sheepdog – do shed. They are not a non-shedding breed they are double coated. Their hair is like wool, when they shed they leave fuzzy bunnies around the house. Their fur is easy to remove from clothes and furniture, as it does not usually weave as does the short coated breeds. Weekly brushing can help to minimize the amount of noticeable shedding.

Q: Can I come to see your Papillons, Japanese Spaniel (Chin) and Shetland Sheepdogs?

An appointment can be arranged. During the week I work and many weekends I am away at dog shows. Visits can usually be arranged at a mutually agreed upon time.

If you are still in the looking and investigating stage, a great place to see some of these breeds is at a dog show. You can see the dogs, meet different breeders as well as see all the other breeds out there. You can email me for more information about where and when there might be a dog show in your area.

Q: Are Papillons, Japanese Spaniel (Chin) and Shetland Sheepdogs good with kids?

Papillon and Shetland Sheepdog – Are an excellent family pet. Smaller children should never be left along with any breed. Supervision is strongly recommended as children can be quick, and not aware of how fragile the puppy can be.

Japanese Spaniels – They can be fragile and need to be closely supervised with smaller children. The Japanese Spaniel was bred more for adults, as they are such a small animal.

Q: Are Papillons, Japanese Spaniel (Chin) and Shetland Sheepdogs smart?

All three breeds are very trainable. Papillons and Shelties are super intelligent! They are bright, active little dogs that excel at doggy sports like obedience, rally-o, flyball, scent hurdling and agility. The Japanese Spaniel is more of a layback breed, but can be trained to go to the bathroom in a litterbox.

Q: Can I buy a show quality puppy?

I have a long waiting list for show quality (adults or pets). From time to time I could have a puppy or young adult available, or know of another breeder that has one.

Q: Can I place a deposit on a puppy?

I do not take deposits on puppies that are not born yet. Once a litter is born I do take deposits to hold puppies (after many questions are asked and answered on both sides).

Q: Do I get to choose my puppy?

On what is available you may or may not have the opportunity to select. In most cases my puppy people have relied on me to make the best match of family to pet.

Q: Will you ship me my puppy?

I will not ship a puppy to any great distance, and it would depend on the airlines. It would be best for you to find a breeder in your area, if you are only looking for a companion.
